Prediction of particulate fouling in full-scale reverse osmosis plants using the modified fouling index – ultrafiltration (MFI-UF) method

چکیده
This study aims at applying and verifying the MFI-UF method to predict particulate fouling in RO plants. Two full-scale plants treating surface water, with average capacity of 800–2000 m3/h, were studied. Firstly, feed concentrate was measured using 5–100 kDa membranes same flux applied (20–26 L/m2.h). Subsequently, particle disposition factor (?) calculated simulate deposition cross-flow filtration. Finally, rates predicted based on ?, compared actual For plant A, results showed that 100 membrane have best agreement (with 3–11 % deviation). B, both 10 agree well 2 15 deviation, respectively). However, 5 is considerably overestimated for plants, which attributed effect low porosity membrane. More widespread applications are required demonstrate most suitable prediction.

Fouling Prediction in Reverse Osmosis Processes
In recent years, membrane separation processes have successfully established footholds in all areas of chemical separations. Semipermeable membranes are now enhancing and even replacing long-time standard techniques such as distillation and solvent extraction (1). They are also being used in the preparation of purified chemical and biological products as well as the treatment and recovery of ma...
متن کاملA Fouling Index Reflecting Statistical Aspects of Fouling Process with Reverse Osmosis Desalination
Reverse osmosis membrane (RO) is becoming a most popular instrument to desalinate seawater as a result of new developments in membrane technology. The critical factor governing successful long-term reverse osmosis (RO) in desalination plants is fouling caused by the turbidity of seawater, such as by suspended solids, sparingly soluble salts, or biological growth. To reduce the turbidity, the se...
متن کاملFouling distribution in forward osmosis membrane process.
Fouling behavior along the length of membrane module was systematically investigated by performing simple modeling and lab-scale experiments of forward osmosis (FO) membrane process. The flux distribution model developed in this study showed a good agreement with experimental results, validating the robustness of the model. This model demonstrated, as expected, that the permeate flux decreased ...

Membrane processes have been successfully employed for treatment of a large number of industrial effluents. Reverse osmosis (RO) and ultrafiltration (UF) are versatile separation and purification tools for the process industries. Both of these techniques are based on the ability of pressure-driven filtration membranes to separate multi-component fluids based on molecular size, shape, and chemic...

Reverse osmosis (RO) has been widely applied in various water and wastewater treatment processes as a promising membrane technology. However, RO membrane fouling is a global issue, which limits it operating flux, decreases water production, increases power consumption and requires periodical membranes Cleaning-in-Place (CIP) procedure. This may result in low effectiveness, high cost and adds en...
